GrantSlam FAQ

Does NIH accept proposals prepared with GrantSlam?

Yes! NIH has known about GrantSlam since our inception. In fact, our first customers were sent to us by people within NIH who had seen our demonstrations! All our forms are reviewed by NIH to ensure that you will have no worries about the acceptability of the forms or the accuracy of the calculations. As a result, GrantSlam has been used to submit tens of thousands of proposals to NIH and, while not all of them have been funded, not one has been turned away for anything related to the forms.

What about those “free” forms from NIH?

Free means many things to many people. If by “free” you mean free to download, then yes, NIH has supplied page by page forms in both WORD and PDF format. But in this case, free has a hefty price from poor usability and wasted time. The comment we most often hear in our demonstrations is, “We have tried the free forms and they are the most painful way to put a proposal together.” Check out our Product Comparison page for further detail about how GrantSlam compares to the free forms.

Does GrantSlam run under MAC OS X?

YES! GrantSlam is a native OS X application.

We do our Research Plans in MS Word. How can GrantSlam help us with this?

Since MS WORD is the dominant method for creating the Research Plan, we’ve enhanced it with special templates to help you become more productive. A special Cayuse template allows you to take a pre-existing Research Plan and format it for paper or electronic submission without tedious cut-and-paste operations. Create the proposal, then use the Cayuse PDF printer to print and circulate drafts or final versions of your proposal document, research plan and Biosketches. All of this functionality means you won’t need to purchase Adobe Acrobat. Nearly all of the proposal pagination is controlled by GrantSlam, eliminating much of the frustration of final document assembly.

You will also be able to keep a variety of Biosketches tuned to the specifics of the proposed research. And with GrantSlam 8, you can collate, paginate and print out your entire document with just a mouse-click.

We have our own systems for accounting and other processes. Can GrantSlam work with these systems?

While GrantSlam 6.1.5 is hard to link to other systems, GrantSlam 8 will work with systems that use a SQL compliant database. Examples of these systems include Oracle, PeopleSoft, Lawson and others. Your purchase of 6.1.5 (with support) will make your upgrade to GrantSlam 8 easy. GrantSlam 8 makes all of the data in the grant repositories accessible by other systems and portable to future versions of GrantSlam. This gives you and your organization the greatest value for your system purchase.

We use a major accounting system of record for our institution. How will GrantSlam work with this system?

Database integration is never easy. However, we have designed GrantSlam 8 to have the technical foundations to create persistent data that can supply detailed budgetary information to post-award accounting systems. Please give us a call or email us with your questions on how to make GrantSlam integrate with your current systems.

Does GrantSlam submit proposals electronically to NIH?

YES! GrantSlam supports electronic submission of all proposal types currently accepted by the NIH.

Does GrantSlam submit proposals electronically to Grants.gov?

No, but we plan to. We are active participants in the Grants.gov electronic submission initiative. We anticipate that our success with the initial system-to-system tests this year with Grants.gov will lead to a comprehensive solution.

What will Cayuse do to support Grants.gov?

We are active participants in the process and intend to support the application process for the SF424 (R&R).

What philosophy would you say drives the design process at Cayuse?

Your investment in technology infrastructure should make research administration and the creation of proposals easier and more efficient. We aim to find the right balance of power and flexibility to help everyone involved in this process.

There are many ways to assemble a successful proposal, so we build GrantSlam with the flexibility to accommodate different approaches. Delivering this flexibility requires a significant amount of domain knowledge and programming skill. It is something our competitors often fail to address.

GrantSlam's flexibility is matched with powerful controls over the process. With over fifty different auto-filled fields, you can easily, reliably and consistently assemble documents from libraries of Biosketches, Professional Profiles, and Institutional Profiles. Sensitive data (such as salaries, ethnicity, etc.) have access controls for both viewing and editing. You get consistency and control without you or your institution being forced into someone else's notion of how to create a proposal.

Finally, we believe that our strength as a company is in making pre-award submission processes as simple, elegant and reliable as possible. Our system is designed to integrate with, but not duplicate, other mission critical systems in your institution, most notably your accounting system of record.

We believe in providing the greatest value to your institution, because we are deeply committed to every step in the path that leads to the advancement of science.
